Chicken kalya(kalya poule, kalia poule, kalya de poulet, murghi kalya) is a typical Mauritian dish. I’ve been trying to know its origin but it turns out that Chicken Kalya is one of those authentic Mauritian recipes! It is basically some kind of yogurt chicken and is an easy chicken curry recipe. Chicken kalya is absolutely delicious and left-over chicken kalia tastes even better! Enough chit-chat, on with the recipe!
Yogurt chicken curry/Kalya chicken recipe
Ingredients:
1whole chicken cut in pieces, or 5 chicken thighs+1 chicken breast cut in big sizes
3 potatoes peeled – cut in big cubes
oil for frying
1 tsp saffron threads, mixed in 2 cups of hot water
turmeric powder
coriander leaves – mint leaves chopped
A 1 tsp garlic paste
1 tsp onion paste
1/2 tsp chilli paste
1/2 cup fried onion
1/2 tsp pepper
2 tsp salt
3 tsp cumin powder
1/2 tsp garam masala
1 cinnamon stick or 1 tsp cinnamon powder
3 cloves or 1tsp cloves powder
pinch of turmeric powder
B 200ml yoghurt
3 tsp milk powder (optional)
Steps:
1.Add list A to chicken and let marinate for at least 1 hour.
2.Add salt and a pinch of turmeric powder to the potatoes. Mix and fry the potatoes.Set aside.
3.Fry the chicken pieces in the same oil or less, if oil is too much.
4.Add the 2 cups water( by now the water should be yellow) to cook 10 minutes.
5.Add potatoes.
6.Mix in ingredients B.
7.Cover and cook for about 25 minutes or until chicken and potatoes are well cooked.
8.Sprinkle coriander-mint leaves when cooked.
9.Serve with rice and a salad.
