This Mauritian-Indian recipe is utterly simple. I was trying to find a name for it and decided that since the 2 main ingredients are yogurt and lemon, I would call it Easy Lemon Yogurt Chicken! I got that easy Mauritian-Indian recipe from my sister during the past winter holidays and thought I would share it with you all. It is so delicious and it has become one of my favorite dishes! Enjoy!
Easy Lemon Yogurt Chicken recipe
Ingredients:
250g chicken breast, cut in bite-size cubes
4 cloves of garlic
1 cm ginger
1/2 medium red onion
2 red chillies
1/2 tsp cumin powder
1/2 tsp garam masala powder
1/4 tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp red chilli powder (optional)
1 whole lemon, lemon juice squeezed out
1 cup of yogurt
1/2 tsp salt
coriander leaves, finely chopped
Steps:
1. Blend onions, garlic, ginger, chillies using a food blender so as to get a fine paste.
2. Mix chicken cubes, indian spices, yogurt, salt, lemon juice and paste from step 1 together. Marinate in fridge for at least 30 minutes.
3. Heat 2 tbsps of oil in a pan. When hot, add the marinated mixture. Cook on low heat. Cover and cook for 10 minutes.
4. Uncover, turn heat to medium and cook the chicken pieces until most of the water has evaporated and the mixture has thickened. Add the chopped coriander leaves and mix.
5. Done!

You can also let the chicken to be more dry if you want or allow some sauce as you did…I prefer the dried version, I get the flavor of the lemon juice (a little sweet-sour tangy taste….)…
greetings, i came across this recipe and was very intrigued wanting to try it but i think the recipe is a bit confusing. I think it would help your followers out if you put the ingredients in the order they are going to be used in the dish, also be more descriptive. ex. “blend onions, garlic….” do you mean mix them together or blend them in a food processor? also when yu speak about the oil you never included an amount of how much oil should be used, and from the pics i think these are deep fried but i am not sure and that amount would help me. For American born people its great to be able to sample other cultures through food which is exactly what i aim to do, so the better the recipe the easier that is. i hope i did not offend in any way. thanks.
Thanks for the comment! I thought it was quite clear that the food is not being deep-fried as I mentioned that you need to cook until most of the liquid has evaporated. Also, I will try my best to include the measurement of oil from now on. I am not offended at all, your comments are most welcome for me to improve my food blogging! Happy cooking!
Hi there
Do you add water at any point whilst cooking?
Hi Ay Kay, there is no need to add water during cooking because I already added lemon juice and yogurt (which contain a sufficient amount of water for this recipe).
