MijoRecipes is a personal website where I aim to share my food
experiences. This website is mainly dedicated to my mother Mijo and her great cooking skills which I hope to master one day. Also, I aim towards creating a platform where people from all around the world can know more about Mauritius and the wonderful Mauritian recipes that are yet to be discovered by other food lovers!
How my love for cooking started…
Back home, I used to eat food from different parts of the world and also, my family rarely ate outside, if not at all. We never bought cakes for birthdays or christmas or any other event. My mother baked the cakes and till now, I haven’t tasted finer cakes than hers. She learnt all by herself through reading various cooking books and of course, trial-and-error. So, I grew up with the cook-what-you-want-to-eat concept.
Naturally, when I just reached Beijing, I had absolutely no clue as to how to cook since I was rarely in the home kitchen, except for eating. I soon became bored with eating outside. Indian curry, beef steak, chocolate cake, tuna pastries, paella, pizza…even the chinese food tasted different and I was outraged that I could not find any place with a decent fried noodles dish! I really missed my mom’s food a lot. So, I forced myself to cook. My first dishes were trash. Too much salt, burnt, not well-cooked…absolute disaster! When I went home for the summer holidays, I decided that I HAD TO LEARN! So, I spent time in the kitchen with my mother, learning the basics of cooking, especially concerning chinese food. Now, cooking is my number one hobby and I am always looking for new recipes to try!
Do not give up if your first cooking dishes are not up to your expectations. Be patient and keep trying!
Where the recipes come from…
Many of the recipes are recipes I learnt from my mother when I was back home in Mauritius or through her frequent e-mails. Some recipes also come from my frequent browsing of food blogs (especially chinese food blogs).
